During a routine observation of shallow-water cephalopod activity, a coconut octopus was documented conducting a detailed survey over a partially completed marine chart. Measurements were taken repeatedly using a small divider compass while additional instruments remained positioned within reach.

Several previously accepted boundaries were revised.

Coconut octopuses are known for unusual problem-solving ability and sophisticated object manipulation, including the collection and transport of shells for use as portable shelter. No comparable explanation has been established for the specimen’s apparent interest in cartography.
